Brackenridge Park Conservancy Steering Committee
Brackenridge Park is one of San Antonio’s oldest recreational parks and public treasurers. To ensure and support its continued use as the “people’s park,” the San Antonio Conservation Society proposed that a nonprofit organization be formed. In early 2008, the Society met with the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, Brackenridge Park leasors, and the public. All agreed that a Brackenridge Park Conservancy was needed.

A steering committee has been selected to prepare the articles of incorporation and bylaws, recruit board members, and raise some operating funds for the Conservancy during the remainder of 2008. Those interested in Brackenridge Park are welcome to attend and participate in the discussions being held by the Steering Committee. See the Proposed Schedule for the calendar.

NOMINEES SOUGHT FOR BOARD OF
BRACKENRIDGE PARK CONSERVANCY

The Steering Committee is seeking nominees for the Board of the Brackenridge Park Conservancy. If you would like to be considered, or if you would like to suggest the name of someone to be considered, please contact the San Antonio Conservation Society by September 8, 2008. Please send contact information (full name, mailing address, phone and email addresses) to kbailey@saconservation.org.

The purpose of the Conservancy is to serve as a steward of and an advocate for Brackenridge Park and as an instrument for preserving and enhancing the park’s historic and recreational resources for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

The roles of the board include

  • Set policies
  • Review performance of Executive Director
  • Serve on committee(s)
  • When needed, review and act on business and resolutions

The Conservancy will be best served by board members that

  • have the ability to think and make decisions at a very high level
  • appreciate the historic nature of the park and provide vision for its future
  • commit to representing the Conservancy and Brackenridge Park in a holistic manner
  • have the highest personal and professional ethics, integrity and values
  • have an interest and/or expertise in parks

During the Conservancy’s first year, board members will serve either a one year or two year term, as drawn by lot. Directors may serve three full terms.

Anticipated time commitment is:

  • Preparation and attendance at full board meetings - the number to be set by the board in 2009.
    2 – 3 hours per meeting
  • For those on the Executive Committee, preparation and attendance at meetings.
    1 – 2 hours per meeting
  • For those serving on committees, preparation and attendance at meetings.
The amount of time depends upon committee function. Normally, it would be an average of 5 hours per month.
